Everyone is looking for a warm place to escape the Canadian winter!
We have had some warmer temperatures through Fall and to start our Winter season and this has allowed insect and wildlife populations to better prepare themselves to survive. Keeping your home, cottage, or business pest-free this winter could be a challenge.
Who should you watch out for this Winter?
- Rodents
The well-known culprits like mice, rats, and squirrels have been very busy preparing for Winter and they have had some extra time this year to store food, generate off-spring and find that extra warm place to stay. While we have been preparing for the cold weather, so have they.
You may hear scratching or squeaking in the walls or sounds of playful patter or all out running in the ceiling. Sometimes hard to identify, but these rent-free tenants generally stick to a routine of moving about searching for food and maintaining their new home. Some of the hazards of rodents include; damage to your property’s structure, insulation, personal items, and in some cases chewed through electrical wiring – they love to sharpen their teeth on wire casing. And of course, health concerns for people and pets if you come into contact with rodent feces.
Whether it’s rats, mice, or squirrels, they are guaranteed to be a problem all over Eastern Ontario.
- Cockroaches & Silverfish
A few pests that creep people out are Cockroaches and Silverfish both found indoors and both very active at night. Common cockroaches in our area are German, American and Oriental types.
These tough to rid pests are huge fans of damp, humid environments like bathrooms and kitchen dishwashers, hiding behind baseboards and close to plumbing fixtures. These pests don’t mind living in your home or apartment as long as the conditions are right.
Silverfish and Cockroaches are mostly active at night on the hunt for food, and you may see a trail of yellow stains or scales for Silverfish and fecal matter that look like pepper from Cockroaches.
- Raccoons
Raccoons are very similar to Squirrels and rodents in that they can cause trouble by breaking into your attic through the roofline in such areas as soffit or roof vents. Active through the night, Raccoons sound much heavier as they lumber through the attic following a familiar path in and out as they search for food. It is common for Raccoons live in an attic for an extended period of time and even to have and raise their young.
- Pest Birds
It would be really nice if Seagulls and Pigeons migrated south for the Winter, unfortunately they do not.
Pigeons and Seagulls are active all year long and usually cause problems for businesses, industrial sites and residential properties including homes, apartments and condos. Seagulls generally bother these properties along water shorelines.
They can cause substantial destruction through product damage or residential structure staining or in some cases buildup of feces in high traffic areas. Deterrents and exclusion are the best methods to control and we provide these services all year long.
The tough news here is that these pests are very common in our area inhabiting businesses and residential properties. With our warmer temperatures this year and an abundance of properties to choose from, it will no doubt be a busy year for our industry. The good news is that at Solace Pest Solutions we have a team of experts for these Winter pests and with our safe and effective approach, we are confident we can help our clients solve their specific pest issues.
