Box Edler Beetles are common throughout North America, especially in our corner of S.E. Ontario. They are a native species and sometimes are referred to as “stink bugs”. However, a relative of stink bugs Box Elder Beetles do not stink, although they can use their scent to deter predators.
Habits and Behaviour
The natural habitat of Box Edler Beetles is hidden in leaf litter, under rocks and logs, and in other natural crevices. They tend to swarm on flat surfaces that attract heat and can be found on vinyl siding or on windowsills.
These harmless critters do not pose a threat to any ornamental plants and gardens on your property. As their name implies, they feed on Box Edler tree seeds as well as Maple and Ash trees. However, when burrowing and traversing they can damage some plants indirectly.
Why Box Elder Beetles Are Viewed As A Pest
Because Box Elder Beetles do not bite humans and do not damage plants and gardens, they are not dangerous pests like hornets or wasps. Because they tend to swarm in large numbers, they can be unsightly and can get inside in the warmer months quite easily.
Due to the large populations that gather and swarm, it makes most of us uncomfortable when they start to get near the house or pets and children. For these reasons, we offer removal services that can be done quickly and at an affordable price.
