Adult gulls are typically white, with varying patterns of gray and black over the back, wings, and head. They are robust birds that are roughly 16 inches in length with a wingspan of 35 – 40 inches.
Why Gulls Are Considered a Nuisance Animal/Pest Species
Gulls are migratory birds that can be found throughout Ontario. Flocks of gulls can be found scavenging for food everywhere and anywhere, but they especially love dumps or landfills, parking lots, beaches, parks, courtyards, farms or any area there is a viable food source. Gulls will find a secluded spot to spend the evenings and sleep; these include cliffs, small islands, tall buildings, other tall structures and even the roof of your home or business. Gulls have been known to travel several miles from where they sleep to where they forage.
Gulls like to land and rest on the roofs of homes, buildings, boats and businesses. Gulls can deface the look of your property with their excessive and unsanitary droppings on sidewalks, parking lots, window ledges, balconies, vehicles, street lights and exteriors of residential, recreational and commercial properties. Their droppings are highly corrosive and can eat through many different surfaces. Gulls and their feces are carriers of bacteria, viruses and a variety of parasites which may present a health hazard.
