Spiders are common arthropods that have two body parts (cephalothorax and abdomen), eight legs and usually six to eight eyes. Their physical appearance varies depending on the type of species.
Habits & Behaviour
Spiders are a diverse group of arthropods and various species are abundant and widespread throughout Ontario. They can be found inside or outside your residential, recreational/cottage and commercial properties. Their numbers in cottage country or waterfront properties can be astounding, particularly on the exterior. All different types of spiders can typically be found indoors behind or beneath furniture and appliances, in corners of rooms and closets, around windows and in shoes, clothes and bedding that are not used on a regular basis.
Outdoors, spiders can be found in stacks of firewood, in storage areas, in outhouses, in screened porches, in water meter boxes, under porches and in or around trees, plants and flower pots. Spiders produce silk in abdominal glands called spinnerets. Spiders use silk to make webs and traps for catching prey. Although there are many people who fear them, spiders play a very essential role in our ecosystems and provide control of many common insect pests. Spiders live in a wide variety of habitats and are extremely resilient creatures. All spiders are venomous predators, feeding mostly on insects and other small arthropods.
Why Spiders Are Viewed As Pests
Although most spiders are generally harmless and pose no real threat to the structure of your property, possessions or foods, they are feared by many and can be an extremely unpleasant and bothersome nuisance. The venom of most species is not very toxic to humans, usually resulting in no more than a slight swelling, inflammation or itching sensation. Most spiders’ fangs are way too small and weak to puncture human skin. Spiders usually will not attempt to bite unless accidentally trapped against the skin or grasped, although some species actively guard their egg sacs or young.
