The coloring of the fur of a deer mouse resembles that of a deer, two-toned with dark to light brownish colouring on the back and white colouring on the legs and underside. The tail is also dark on top and white underneath. They have proportionately large ears, eyes and small feet. Their size ranges from 5-8 inches in length and they generally weigh less than 30 grams.
Why Deer Mice Are Considered A Nuisance Animal/Pest Species
Deer mice are especially dangerous to humans because they can spread the potentially fatal Hantavirus. The virus can be spread by touching infected mice or by breathing in the dust from their feces!
Deer mice can be found throughout Ontario and are active all year round. They are nocturnal and are rarely seen in their outdoor habitat. They often construct nests in hollow logs or tree stumps, under logs and stones, around fences and structures, and occasionally in bird nests and vacant burrows. Deer mice are rarely a major problem in urban residential areas but if you reside or run a business in a rural or semi-rural area, there is always a possibility that deer mice could enter and infest your residential, recreational/cottage, or commercial properties. Once they nest inside a property, they have a tendency of becoming quite annoying and troublesome, getting into stored food and polluting many areas throughout property with urine and feces.
