There are eight species of Bats in Ontario and the most common is currently the Little Brown Bat. The Little Brown Bat is between 6cm to 10cm long and has glossy brown fur on the back with slightly paler, greyish fur underneath. The wing membranes are dark brown with a typical wingspan of 20cm to 30cm.
Why Bats Mice Are Considered A Nuisance Animal/Pest Species
The Little Brown Bat is gregarious meaning they live in groups and can live for more then 10 years. Groups or colonies of Bats choose buildings, caves, trees, rocks, and wood piles as roosting sites. The Little Brown Bat are able to gain access to building through small gaps or holes. Little Brown Bats do not chew their way in, but are able to squeeze into gaps that are slightly larger than a nickel.
Bats are amazing and very beneficial to the environment, but unfortunately may cause damage to your residential, recreational or business properties. Each bat that lives in your home will excrete droppings (“guano”) and urine that amounts to as much as it’s body weight per day. The combination of guano and urine can create strong offensive odours, transmit potentially harmful diseases and deteriorate just about any building material it contacts and therefore cause considerable damage to your property.
